Encouraging Interest in STEM through Summer Robotics Camp

Summer camps provide an opportunity for children with similar interests to come together for a week, or longer, to gain a unique experience based upon those interests. These camps have been utilized as a means of increase student interest and awareness in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

This STEM Champ’s camp utilised a combination of visual, build activities, and competitions to keep students engaged, teach them about various science and engineering disciplines, and have a fun experience.

Robots provided an ideal platform for introducing a large number of STEM topics in a fun and engaging way. Through a single learning activity, campers are introduced to topics related to mathematics, physics, electrical engineer, computer engineering, computer science, mechanical engineering.

Day 1: Monday’s goal is to provide a foundation for computing and electronics.

Day 2: The second day’s focus was on introducing the students to robots and their sensors.

Day 3: With a foundation on what robots are and how they perceive the environment, the third day focuses on robot motion and then the basics of robot control where perception and action are tied together.

Day 4: The fourth morning focuses on students learning to write their own programs.

Day 5: The Bot competition will be held.

Lessons Learned : Using competitions provide a great tool to encourage students to apply what they learned and reinforce their earlier build experiences. The bots competition encourage students to focus both on hardware and software. Many of the campers built upon their previous robots rather than starting from scratch. The talent show will allow students to showcase both their creativity and the diversity of their experience. Many of the build activities will be focused upon robots that wander and explore. For the talent show, robots will be developed that are more creative, aesthetic, etc.

An Educational Robotics-STEM-Coding Lab to Investigate Cognitive Strategies and to Foster Learning

Our Lab is dedicated both to research and education. As result we are responsible for the academic development of STEAM expertise for students who work closely together with our researchers and academics.

Our research requires cross-disciplinary investigations in several areas such as biologically inspired algorithms, evolutionary algorithms, swarm intelligence, psychology, machine learning, data mining, computational neuroscience and cognitive science, among others.

Cognitive abilities put into action by learners in using a Robotics Serious Game have been investigated and data has been collected by administering a pre and a post-test on motivation and using Project Based Learning (PBL) methodology. Significant results have been acquired on:

  • Students’ motivation in relation to their performance
  • Team work strategy, analyzing the PBL
  • Learning results.

Findings showed that “intrinsic motivation” of the participating students, gathered with a specific questionnaire, was high since the beginning of the Lab experience, corroborating the hypothesis that these cognitive activities are able to stimulate curiosity, interest, enjoyment and to foster the learning also in STEM careers.

The importance of STEM learning

STEM learning is the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and maths and is part of our everyday lives. So why has STEM learning not been as significantly regarded as other subjects such as English?

Why is STEM learning important?

It is important for many reasons. “STEM innovations have been rapidly transforming our everyday lives; from the way we grow our food, to the way we cure diseases, connect with friends and family, and understand the world around us”. “STEM disciplines provides a pathway for children to explore a wide range of exciting areas in science, math, and engineering. Preschool children are naturally interested in science and math. Almost everything young children do involves exploring their world”.

“It’s about developing skills such as creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and curiosity. These skills are transferable to a wide range of situations that children may face later in life.” Not only this, but “children who engage in science and math regularly develop circuits to make learning in these areas faster and easier”, who believes that the neglect of these skills contributes to children being left behind. “it is key that everyone in society, not just a select few, are confident in engaging with STEM subjects in order to thrive in the modern world.”

What can be done to increase and improve the interest and education in STEM subjects in the early years?

“Children think like scientists. They are naturally curious because everything is new to them” , “Educators and parents will know how many ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions 3-year-olds can express about anything– ‘Why is the sky blue?’, ‘Why do we have two eyes?’, ‘How do fish breathe?’ and so on. However, how often do we treat these questions from children as scientific enquiries based on first-hand observations?”

“Practitioners and parents need to be educated. We know that children learn best when they can they interact with materials and observe the result. When this is accompanied by adult dialogue, they learn even more. Learning in science should be through scientific inquiry.”

“Supportive adults are key to STEM learning, particularly for girls and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Children need adults who believe that all young people are capable of reaching their full potential. “while engaging with children directly, we also seek to engage and inspire the adults who accompany young children in seeing the value of hands-on STEM learning.”

“Play in early childhood is essential to development”. Having this, “contributes to the cognitive, social and emotional well-being of children.”  To become confident STEM thinkers, children need to play. “Whether play is free or guided by an adult who offers activities inspired by the child’s interests, play is ideal for learning, practicing and developing new skills.”
