Role of STEM Education in improving the economy


As the time is passing by, there are many factors involved in disturbing the economy of the country. One of the major factors is the unemployment rate in India, which generally hindering growth rate of India. Unemployment is not because we don’t have jobs, nor we have people to work, the problem is students lack key skills or abundant requirement for the job. As the start-up era, Make in India is on the rise, it will continue providing jobs for the students and professionals in future too. This unemployment problem is called the “job-skills gap”. One of the solutions to eradicate the “job-skills” gap is STEM Education.

When we look at STEM (Science Education Engineering and Mathematics) to solve this unhealthy economic rate of the country, we can definitely get the solution. STEM Education can be the most awaited change we need in our education curriculum. STEM Education involves rigorous practice with clear identification of concepts, which help in the practical application of technical concepts. Generally, there are no existing algorithms involved while teaching STEM lessons, as kids are asked to come up with their own. STEM makes a person far more than sufficient for a job and well acquainted with related job skills. STEM Education is the key to innovation and economic development of the country by transforming ideas and imaginations and providing them in form of services and products. Some changes in our education system to eradicate unemployment in future can be:

  • Introducing rigorous math and science lessons with new standards and brain-storming assessments
  • Recruiting skilled teachers and instructors
  • Providing a platform for STEM students, where they can break and make new things, this would give them a space to explore their creativity and imagination

The growth rate of STEM jobs alone is 17 percent, whereas in other areas it is just 10 percent. Pursuing STEM Education can be the choice of a lifetime as it is a booming education sector and the next revolution idea. It is generally preferred to work in a growing or booming industry, rather than going for the already existing sectors, as the growing or blooming industries have less competition as compared to the existing sectors, which can lead to faster promotion and chances of success is very high. If we have a skill which fits in the growing sector (STEM Education), we don’t have to focus on barriers and liabilities. The only things we need to do is revise and update ourselves. STEM Education somewhere somehow helps in implanting the required expectations of the technical job positions. Be it scholastic skills or non-scholastic skills, STEM helps us in becoming a better version of ourselves. In STEM Education, kids are supposed to be technical developers instead of being consumers of technology. The idea is to make kids job and business proficient, so that they can rise and shine in their field. This is only possible when kids are well-acquainted with technology and have a proactive attitude to answer questions and tackle obstacles.

Importance of STEM Education for Elementary grades

As the technical dependence is increasing, the young generation is losing its charm and way to new skills. We are lagging behind many nations in STEM (Science Education Technology and Mathematics) related fields and we need to something to do about that. In our current education, kids are taught thousands of problems with the same approach and algorithm which makes a student quite passive towards studies. Suppose we go to a valley for fishing, then what is the best way to teach your kid to fish? Will you fish for him lifetime? Or keep on gifting him new fishes as he grew up? The answer is definitely “no”, as this makes your kid less interesting in fishes, as he had no efforts in dealing with fishing. Instead of giving fishes, why don’t we teach them how to fish in a proper manner, with hundreds of techniques and practice sessions? Now compare the same scenario with the education system, the education system is fishing and new courses it offers are fishes. In it, the method of fishing and technique is STEM Education. As simple as that! STEM help us in solving a problem in a number of organized ways. This improves critical thinking and problem-solving skills.


Creativity is another aspect, which needs to be amplified in each kid’s mind. People with creativity unleash the best of them in the time of their lives. Creativity simply means doing something in a unique way and maintaining originality in every firm. Creativity in class evolves innovative thinking in students, which thereby helps in discovering the super-scientist in them! Project-based learning helps kids in innovating and improving their creative skills. In STEM kids practice lots of activities and get group project assignments. These small educational changes can initiate a self of being an engineer and realizing one’s responsibility at a very early age. Also, STEM gives elementary school students a space to explore and play with science. For example, in STEM kids are asked to perform a number of experiments like glowing a bulb with the help of potato, make a prototype of the greenhouse effect and much more, which makes them concern about the global issues and find ways to eradicate them. STEM teachers, which are a bit different from other teachers, try their best to make kids understand concepts and ask them to perform activities on their own. When someone does an experiment on his own, he might fail many times, but in the end, he would be able to understand what the real learning aspects of the experiment are and would feel a sense of achievement in the end, after completion of the experiment.

Teaching STEM in elementary classes opens the door for teachers and students to become tomorrow’s leaders and followers. By 2020, students with strong foundation in STEM (Science Education Technology and Mathematics) will play a major role in India’s competitiveness and economic stability. Teachers can teach kids the basic aspects of problem-solving, in order to provide kids a competitive edge. Why is STEM Education so important?

STEM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics is an important part of our lives. STEM is important as it riddles with every single aspect of our life.

STEM is the future of education and thereby becomes the future of our children. The way STEM education curriculum is designed is to make sure, a child grabs all the fundamental concepts in the class itself and uses them wherever, in whichever problem required. By 2025, jobs of utmost importance are those of biomedical engineers, mechanical engineers, computer engineers, civil engineers, economic and finance officials. It is crystal clear, that most of the jobs need STEM Education for a clear base and acknowledge great application of concepts. For a proper career, one needs a proper orientation to get desired results, as one can’t win a marathon by running at maximum speed but in opposite direction. A firm re-thinking and stability of mind are required while tackling a complex problem. These important skills are taught in STEM Education at a very early age. Stipulating STEM as the direction of your education can prove to be a blessing for your character. One learns the practical application of concepts, theories, and ideas through STEM Education. With the advancement of technology, one has to be well equipped with relevant skills to get the desired job, as one can’t simply put their life on the edge of formulas and rote learning. That time was a bit different, have a look at the resources around you. Are the resources same as they were explained in your textbooks? The answer is no, with the advancement of science and technology, everything changed its basic form and operation.

Making girls future ready with STEM Education

Women and Girls, from time to time are underrepresented in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Statistics wise the number of girls in STEM fields is quite less and is very disappointed being a part of a developing country. The reasons why girls are not interested in STEM is still not clear and need to be acknowledged clearly. As the concern for STEM Education is gradually increasing across the globe, it becomes more imperative for us to think and find solutions to fill the gap between girls and STEM Education.

The less female participation in STEM fields is not because girls don’t score pretty well in science or they don’t understand much. In fact, girls do score more in STEM fields and pass exams like GRE or SAT, but the problem is they’re prone with non-stem fields because they are easy to understand and don’t need much effort to replicate. This highlights the position of educators and instructors to focus on how girls will get interested in STEM, rather than focusing on their understanding and STEM skills, as they are already well-acquainted with it. Be it schools or an engineering high class, we often find the number of girls is quite less than the number of boys. This is not because girls don’t have required assets or ability to do well in life or boys do well in STEM fields. The reason is girls are of creative and fiction nature, they like fields where they learn something in form of a story or a presentation. However, people in the past used to teach STEM fields in a very basic and strict curriculum based manner, which made girls disinterested in STEM fields. This created a form of an image in their minds like “Science is boring, as it has a lot of theories” which is again just a mere false belief. Story-telling or presentation learning can help in igniting the hidden potential of STEM career in a female child. If we don’t grow, evolve or change through time, we end up suffering. This is why the world has a great diversity today. People are diversified in terms of economy, knowledge, experience and belief. Research suggests that storytelling activates brain more than word recognition or simple basic theory. Exposing girls to STEM Education at a tender age can help in eradicating old beliefs and can encourage girls to pursue STEM career.
