How to Encourage Innovation and Creativity in Kids

Innovation and creativity are skills that are crucial for human beings. They are skills that can e developed within people. Be it as individuals or members of the work force, creative thinking and problem solving skills are always necessary since these skills are essential for STEM, social, and emotional intelligence. Unfortunately, the significance of creativity is undervalued today. Today’s dismal situation that discourages innovation and creativity in students, and the imminent need to encourage kids to become creative, has been discussed in a previous article. This article is going to look at how one can inspire students to innovate and how exactly STEM helps to do so.

The most important step in encouraging creativity is to add an element of play and fun in learning. When children enjoy learning, not only do they engage readily in it, but they will be brave to question and explore what they are learning. Adding fun to play will encourage them to take risks during study and also to not fear mistakes. This last part is very important for encouraging creativity. Students today are taught to give the right answers rather than learn. However, when students make mistakes, they learn from mistakes much more than they do from successes. Being brave enough to take risks and being patient enough to learn from their mistakes is important to cultivate a passion for their studies. When students come across obstacles and fail in their attempts, they think about what they have done. This brings out their innate curiosity and leads them to question about it.
Questioning their studies is part of, and a result of understanding what the students are studying. The more students understand, the more they become curious and the more they question. Curiosity keeps the thirst for knowledge alive and ensures that the passion for learning and creating does not die out. A child’s mind is limitless and always exploring. It should be allowed to explore and question without limits. Children often think up brilliant and unprecedented solutions to their problems thanks to their limitless imagination. Hence observing, questioning, learning and questioning again should be encouraged within the students. Since STEM subjects are ever growing subjects, the students only get more engaged as they delve deeper into their studies.
Encouraging children to find answers by themselves is yet another significant approach to encourage innovation. Giving students ready made answers makes them receptors dependent on the informant. But thinking up answers to their problems, makes them creative and independent. Another added benefit of STEM subjects is that they support this development. No STEM problem has a single solution, and students should be encouraged to find as many solutions as they can. There are many ways to reach the answer, and the students can find different ways. This again makes the children think about what they are learning and develops their thinking and analyzing skills.
STEM education integrates these above mentioned steps in its curriculum and hence promotes innovative and creative skills. STEM education begins early and continues to encourage productive thinking throughout schooling. It provides a learning environment that supports exploration and engages students in their studies. Students are encouraged to actively participate in class and take part in team work and brainstorming sessions. These make learning a fun and memorable experience that redefines the concept of studying. Students part of this curriculum are encouraged to voice their ideas and not fear judgment. All ideas are encouraged equally. Since mistakes are also considered a part of learning, students have nothing to fear and everything to gain. They create their ideas and work upon them. They deal with real life challenges and learn through them. Innovation and creativity is celebrated and rewarded and this is always encouragement for the children.

Its right Time to promote STEM education!

Have you ever thought how our educational system was found? Initially it was just an idea proposed by great Indian scientists, professors and researchers. Then eventually it was executed at a small level i.e. only few schools were asked to practise this system in their curriculum and were convinced that they will get better results. Then after all the pros and cons, they started simplifying it and promoting to a larger level. Gradually this system became the education system of India. Standard textbooks and examination contents also improved during this period. Then after some time it got practised all over India. And today we have great scientists, entrepreneurs, engineers and teachers who passed after succeeding in accordance with the education system. So basically this is how an idea grows from initiation to execution, and eradicates out drawbacks. That’s how our educational system took birth around 90’s.


Do you think an idea can be executed once initiated every year and all time valid? The answer is simply no. For example the technologies used in the past are no longer beneficial today. Science and technology are rising up at a greater pace, one has to keep him updated to survive in this drastic world full of opportunities. One can’t use old tools to build new and creative things today. This is where the Indian educational system lags in. We are teaching the same things for years and years. One has to work more on rote learning to succeed in their schools. Practical knowledge given is not appropriate to handle makerspace machinery and 21st century tools. Taking readings and verifying the same experiment done decades ago shouldn’t be the main emphasize of practical education. Solving questions using the same algorithm and applying formulae by inserting values in a function is also not a good thing to foster technical skills. To overcome and improve the education system of India, one has to make significant changes and implement it at a global level.

One such change is STEM education and realizing its importance. Here are some ways to promote and foster STEM education as it’s a must aspect of a good school education system:

  • Awareness: Parents should read and analyze what their kids are studying and try to match what they did when they were kids. By observing the education system, we can easily know its setbacks and propose new ways to improve and furnish it.
  • Asking Questions: Questioning is a habit which differentiates people on the basis of their skill. Society and parents should question education authorities related to their educational system and why kids are so used to it.
  • Importance of STEM education: STEM is the change which an educational system needs. To produce excellent professionals we need our kids to be in technical lead and enrich critical thinking. This is possible through STEM education only as it’s based on technical skills and out of the box thinking.
  • Seminars and organisations: Many associations and organisations should join hands together to promote STEM education in

schools and colleges. Because this is how an idea grows and initiates from one person to another.

Thinking is the mother of action. When a group of people think of an idea and analyze it completely, they somehow know how to execute this idea. Nothing is impossible if we are skilled and educated enough to implement what we think and observe. STEM Education in India – Overcoming the Challenges

Every revolution has its own history and to make a revolution possible, the community and its leader has to face a lot of challenges and go through many outlasting struggles and never ending peculiarities. Same scenario holds for implementing STEM education in India and changing current education system. But the leaders and communities are in a no way to give up fostering this education and produce the best of engineers and doctors, our country ever had. Implementing technology in education system is a great challenge, as it might take time to foster it at a greater level. Another tough job is to implement STEM education along with latest technologies and to make sure the social development and assets of an individual.
After independence, the country was not sufficiently funded and acknowledged to practice science and technology at a national level. The initiation to empower technology in education system lead to opening of various global and life exploring institutions like IITs, IIMs and IIScs. But as the population increased restlessly admission to these institutions became difficult and promoted coaching institutes on the counter part. In the coaching industry, again rote learning was fostered to crack the entrance exams of these institutes, thereby making a major part of the population weak in technical skills. STEM education is a step initiated to counter that effect, so that students will learn how to apply concepts practically rather than applying formula on a piece of paper. STEM will definitely promote and encourage kids to empower skills and try to understand the depth of their respective fields.
Quality STEM education system:
One of the biggest challenge involved in implementing STEM education is to design infrastructure, curriculum and to provide kids the best guidance and support. The faculties need to be up to the edge to provide the best guidance. Another challenge is the funding, a system needs funding to carry forward construction of Makerspaces, DIY (Do it Yourself Tools), best computers etc which are some of the basic aspects of the STEM education. Also the main idea should be to implement STEM education in all societies namely privileged and underprivileged, so that there is not much diversity in the students(like half follow the old education system and the other half enjoy and learn STEM). The idea should be implemented in small towns to channelize the potential of the school-going skills.

Being a second most populous country with unmatched talent and culture, India needs a combined support from political and other education society to avail the opportunity and benefits of STEM EDUCATION in India. Kids: Makers and future of India

A life begins as an embryo transforms into a clump of cells, then these cells develop into a fetus and eventually this fetus is bought into the world. The cells that develop into a full grown baby are known as stem cells. Now, these cells are quite special in themselves as they can transform into any kind of cell, tissue or an organ. Stem cells could turn into heart cells, muscle cells, liver cells, and even into the cells in the irises of our eyes. Such tremendous potential of stem cells grants them the status of being special and unique from all else.
If we move along similar lines of perception, we can observe that quite similar to the stem cells, a child is also a source of immense potential. This potential provides them with the ability to follow any profession, and live a dignified life. But this potential in kids is like a seed lying dormant through winter waiting for a drop of rain to sprout and develop into a fruitful tree.

Though kids have such remarkable abilities and such curious brains, they need their share of sunlight to emerge out of dormancy. And STEM education provides that push that helps kids realize the true potential of their intellect. Through STEM a student learns to critically analyze, study, and determine what constitutes a fact and a fallacy. Science gives one the tools to observe, experiment, and theorize. It grants one the ability to look at something and ask questions that are required to be asked.
STEM not only develops a well-educated mind but also nurtures a well formed mind. Such a well formed mind; more than augmenting the intellectual growth, makes one a responsible citizen, one who is aware of all the perils ailing our world, one who realizes that the world could be a better place only if we try to make it so; And one who knows that an ocean of truth lays undiscovered ahead of him, and humbles himself in the face of this vast ocean.
Kids developed in such intricate ways will be the future bearers of the torch of humanity. The world we give to our kids will be a different from the one that we received. The inheritance and the education we grant them will determine the way they transform our country. The future lies in their hands, and it is them who will mold it brick by brick and help it reach its zenith. It is our responsibility to help children witness the wonder that our world is, and this will develop them into successful individuals who can perhaps become an engineer, a scientist, an analyst or may be a musician. But given proper education, and molding their minds in a way that induces free thinking will transform them into innovators and creators of the next generation.
Einstein once said “Everyone is talented but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, then it’ll spend its whole life thinking itself a fool”. And he’s aptly correct in his words, as it’s our responsibility to induce young minds to find the passion that inspires them. This way we’ll have a generation of youngsters fuelled with ambition to accomplish great things and bring glory to our country. Kids, Innovation, Makerspace and STEMCHAMP

Kids are awesome innovators and creators. They create mini guns from pencil and erasers in class, incarnate out their creativity from sand and clay in the ground and provide the best in them when they perform. The audacity and curiosity level of a kid is very high. Scientists say that if an adult maximizes his efforts as a kid, the probability of getting success increases by 67%. Kids never give up, they keep learning as they perform and act. Increasing necessity of STEM Education

Talking about childhood, just try to remember what were the basic questions asked to you, when you were in school? It might be when Adolf Hitler died? When he was born? And other related stuff. Also we used to face questions like who defeated whom in world wars or who ruled kingdom and from which to which year. Does it make any sense? Whether you remember any of those? Remembering facts and forgetting about it after the exam should not be the main emphasize of the education system. If this would have been so, we wouldn’t have scientists like Einstein and Newton. Every year India produces engineers in bulk, but only few out of this bulk are skilled. Encouraging Kids to Become Future Innovators

Innovation and creativity are without doubt the skills that has made human beings progress over time. It was the birth of new ideas that led to various technological advancements. While one might view technology as mostly electronic objects, technology is anything that helps us solve problems we face in our lives. Therefore, technology has been developing since prehistoric times, and it improves with time because of the experimenting nature of human beings.  The innate curiosities within human beings have led us to new and better ideas and innovations. Therefore, thinking, questioning, exploring and problem solving were skills that used to be encouraged in schools and other learning centers. Many successful people like Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs have succeeded thanks to their brilliant, creative and innovative minds.

However, today’s youth is increasingly pressured to conform to the standardized form of education practiced throughout the country. The challenges of learning have been observed to get tougher and tougher with time. Today students’ lives are focused on standardized test results and piles of homework. The problem of standardization is that it deprives children of their creativity. The children are encouraged to give right answers rather than to think and question. Reproducing what is taught to them does not necessarily require them to comprehend and think about what they are learning.  Students who score well in tests are encouraged, while those who voice thoughtful questions or those who think outside the box are rebuked. Students therefore, prefer the safe, tried and tested methods, of study. They are hence discouraged from taking the risk of being wrong and this limits their creativity and innovation skills.

In this era, creative thinking and innovation is as important as ever. In this period of fast paced changes, the future economic growth and progress depends on innovation. It is also extremely difficult to predict what future jobs will be. The existing jobs may not be required in the future, and new career options will arise with time.  Therefore, educating the young generation in the current education system does not yield successful careers for them. The students need to thus be more creative and innovative in their education, and it is the responsibility of teachers and parents to encourage it. The focus should not be on outcome driven studies, but on fun, risk-oriented, random, and activity based studies that propel the child to ponder, analyze, question, solve and create.  We should relax on data driven thinking and let students imagine and be creative.

Curriculum like STEM encourage such creativity and innovation skills. STEM education is a very important means of making students innovative and productive in their endeavors. Scientific study has evolved with the help of errors and resulting corrections. Making students understand that being wrong is also a part of learning is crucial today. The hands on learning practiced in STEM curriculum encourages them to not fear mistakes and learn from them. It motivates them to think up out of the box solutions. Creativity is acknowledged in this curriculum and thus students gain confidence in their innovative skills. This also helps bring about a true passion for the subjects within students. The projects and presentations within the curriculum give students the chance to not only evolve their creative thinking and innovation, but also to act upon them and develop their ideas. Working on their ideas also help students take note of real life challenges that they may have overlooked during planning.

Another significant feature of the present education system that prevents wholesome development of the students is the teacher-lead classrooms. In such scenarios, students are passive receptors and there is no spaces for the student to self develop. In STEM education, students are encouraged to self learn and teachers observe and help them. When students make their own questions, it helps the teachers grasp the students’ understanding of the concepts. It also ensures that students are active in their learning and that they are thinking about what they are learning. By encouraging students to come up with questions, and then helping them find the answers on their own develops their thinking skills and analytical skills. It is necessary to develop these skills since they prepare kids for facing real world problems during their careers.

 The design thinking methods used in STEM learning is also aimed to unleash creativity and explore innovative solutions in the context of group discussion and brain storming.  The value accorded to team work in STEM learning not only teaches students to work together and communicate with each other, but also helps bring about better ideas that result from the collaboration of individual thoughts. Has anyone thought of how the latest technology impact school children mainly from our home land? Well there are benefits and as well as drawbacks. The latest tech gig is  a great  advantage for Indian kids love robotics.  It Is known as STEMCHAMP.


STEM is a company which designs chips and other programming gadgets, which are child safe and are easy to program. STEM means SCIENCE,TECHNOLOGY,ENGINEERING and MATH.these subjects play a crucial role in life or in daily is a relative and innovative way to approach kids.It does also consists of a curriculum that aims to bring awareness about these core subjects.the teaching aids in schools are insufficient for these subjects. Thus, STEMCHAMP aims to change it. In India most of the subjects are taught from the early years and educators put much emphasis on learning, then why not skill based and engineering based subjects such as robotics. That way we could reach to the students with lesser opportunities.

If we want a digital India and encourage innovation and manufacturing, then we must increase the awareness about STEM-FIELDS. The STEMCHAMPS are out to do their job, are we ready, if yes go on out to explore the world of STEM .Let the dream come true.
